Project Description:

This illustration is a poster for the The Northern Illustration Prize and The Prize is themed around ‘Monkey’

This painting depicts the moment when a shipwrecked monkey was hanged by the people of Hartlepool.

The people's fear of the monkey is expressed by the difference in size of the monkey and the fisherman.
The fishermen are rendered as fish. This anthropomorphic depiction is an articulation of the identity of the people of Old Hartlepool which was an original fishing village and existed before West Hartlepool.
